Child pages inherit edit restrictions, automatically
In Confluence Cloud, view restrictions flow down to child pages, but edit restrictions don't. Lock a page so only your team can edit it, and anyone can still edit the pages below. Treelock fixes that: pages below a restricted page get the same edit restrictions, and keep them in sync.
What Treelock does
- New pages created under a restricted page get its edit restrictions.
- Moved and copied pages take the edit restrictions of their new parent.
- When a parent's restrictions change, pages that inherited them follow the change, all the way down.
- When a parent is unlocked, the restrictions Treelock added below it are removed.
- Existing pages: apply it once to a whole space, or to everything below one page.
Treelock never changes a page that already has its own edit restrictions set by a person. If someone changes an inherited page's restrictions by hand, that page keeps its own restrictions from then on.
Getting started
- Install Treelock from the Atlassian Marketplace.
- Go to the space, open Space settings and find Treelock.
- Turn it on for the space. It's off by default, so nothing changes until a space admin turns it on.
- Optional: click Apply to existing pages to bring the pages you already have in line.
To apply it below a single page, open the page's ••• menu and choose Apply edit restrictions to pages below. You need permission to edit that page.
Good to know
Why Treelock appears as an editor
Confluence requires whoever sets a restriction to be included in it. So Treelock is listed next to the people and groups who can edit an inherited page. It uses that access only to keep restrictions in sync.
Only edit restrictions
Treelock copies who can edit. View restrictions already inherit in Confluence, so Treelock leaves them alone.
Large spaces
Big jobs run in the background, about 50 pages at a time. A space with thousands of pages can take a few minutes. The Recent activity list in the Treelock space settings shows what was done.
Turning it off
Turning Treelock off in a space stops all future changes there. Restrictions already copied stay as they are, so nobody suddenly gains edit access. You can remove them by hand, or unlock the parent while Treelock is on.
Your data
Treelock runs entirely on Atlassian's platform (Forge) and doesn't send data anywhere else. It stores only Confluence IDs, never page titles or content. See the privacy policy.
